Ookla’s analysis showed that Jio’s 5G performance depends on the spectrum band it uses. Jio plans to gradually expand its 5G service across the entire country by December 2023. The telco’s network is based on a 5G standalone (SA) architecture. Jio, on the other hand, launched its beta ‘True 5G’ service on Dussehra (October 5) in four cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Varanasi. Sunil Mittal-driven Airtel had first launched 5G network in eight cities Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, Hyderabad, Siliguri, Chennai, Nagpur, and Bengaluru on October 1, and will expand across India by March 2024. “These new 5G results show that 5G speeds are far superior than India’s existing network,” said Kechiche. India ranked 117th in the world for mobile download speed at 13.52Mbps in August 2022, according to Ookla.
In Varanasi, however, Jio and Airtel achieved closer parity, with Airtel achieving a 5G median download speed at 516.57Mbps to Jio’s 485.22Mbps median download speed since June 2022. Airtel’s median download speed was 33.83Mbps while Jio had a much faster median download speed at 482.02 Mbps. In contrast, the two telcos’ speeds varied the most In Kolkata.
Ookla recorded the 5G download speeds in four metros since June 2022 – including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Varanasi.Īirtel fell behind Jio in the densely populated Mumbai with a median download speed of 271.07Mbps while the latter had a faster speed at 515.38Mbps.
